Paris is aiming to become the world’s most connected capital city with its plan to have citywide wireless Internet coverage by the end of next year. Under the project, the city will put up 400 free WiFi access points that will beam to the antennae set up by Internet service providers. The city expects to award contracts by 2007 to private firms that will oversee the installation of free wireless access points in parks, squares, libraries, and public areas. It also plans to cut levies on firms that will install fiber optic cables as part of a campaign to connect 80 percent of all buidlings in the city to ‘ultra-high speed’ fiber optic networks by 2010.
